PETER SVIDLER: GRISCHUK’S TIME TROUBLE DOES NOT MEAN A LOT

The third game of the final match between the Russian Grandmasters Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler finished in a draw. Now to continue playing in the World Cup Grischuk will have to win with Black. So far — Grandmasters narrate about their third game.

— Peter, every member of the press center was afraid that the match would be finished today. Especially when Alexander has the last seconds on the clock.

Svidler: This is not the first time I see this kind of a situation. That’s why I don’t think it means something. Anyway I try to estimate the position objectively for I understand that he will not be lost in time. More than that an unfortunate move would not be done even. That is why Grischuk’s time trouble does not mean a lot.

— Alexander, what did not you manage to do today?

Grischuk: At the beginning I spent a lot of time for I did not expect such an opening. One more important moment: instead of 9.Re1+ I wanted to makes the following move (but later I changed my mind) Bxc6+ bxc6 10.cxd4 Bb6 11.Re1+ Be6 12.Bg5 Qb8 13.Ne5 Qb7 14.Qf3 with threats on Nxc6 and Nxf7 but at the last moment I found out 14...Bxd4 15.Nxf7? 0−0!. Otherwise it would give a big advantage, to my mind.

Thus I had to play another way. Of course my position was more comfortable, a question was if I will manage to set up my pieces and move c4. If yes, I have a big advantage; if I don’t manage I have nothing. In the end of course I had a position closer to a loss than to a victory. But most probably it was close to a draw.

— Sasha, to continue the match you should win with Black. So, will you prepare anything extra ordinary?

Grischuk: the most important is to create something extra ordinary!

— Peter, it is amazing you did not win with Black today.

Svidler: I am bitterly upset.
