THE CHESS PLAYER FROM UGRA STARTED THE TOURNAMENT WITH THE VICTORY

The Russian chess player Dmitry Jakovenko playing White defeated Saleh Salem from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During his press-conference that took place right after the game he gave his short comments on the events on the chess board.

 — The game turned out to be difficult. I do not think that after the opening I had any advantage. Most probably there was no advantage rather than the opposite. However at some point my opponent did not resist and went for complications that were advantageous for me. Possibly Saleh Salem could have played stronger but I already had better chances. It seems to me that it was not the right time for him to break up the center and he could have continued maneuvering thoughtfully.

— What did you know about your opponent? — I knew that he was 18 years old and he could be rather dangerous as an opponent.

— You represent Russia as well as Ugra that is hosting this World Cup. Does this fact help you anyhow? — I would answer joking: I feel comfortable thanks to the climate rather than walls!

— What do you think about the playing conditions in the Ugorian Chess Academy? — Maybe the playing hall is not big enough to admit 128 participants, but there will be only 64 of us left in two days. Generally I feel very comfortable here.
