DAVID NAVARA: WHEN I OFFERED A DRAW I WAS NOT THINKING ABOUT THE PRIZE

The Grandmasters David Navara and Alexander Moiseenko were awarded with the prize «Fair Play», established by the Governor of Ugra Natalia Komarova.

The Director of the Department on Physical Training and Sport of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Ugra Evgeny Redkin was charged by the Governor to award the prize. At the end of the official ceremony the attendants met with journalists at the press conference.

— Evgeny, how did you come up with the idea to establish the prize for the fair play?

-Redkin: This idea belongs to the Governor of Ugra Natalia Vladimirovna Komarova. Certainly, the Head of the region is a very busy person; nevertheless, she spares her time to watch the games of the World Cup very attentively. When the Governor got to know about the development of the match Moiseenko — Navara, Natalia Vladimirovna took a decision to establish this prize and ward them with the Cups thus expressing her admiration of their honorable gesture.

— David, are you pleased with the fact that your deed was appreciated by the Governor of Ugra?

— Navara: I am very grateful to Mrs. Komarova. However, I was not thinking about the prize when I offered a draw. I simply made a fair move.

— Alexander, as a result you did not manage to qualify to the 4th Round. Have you ever given any though to the fact that if you did not continue the game, you could have still participated in the battle for the World Cup?

— Moiseenko: Of course, the defeat always evokes negative emotions in every sportsman. But this is not the case. I lost not only to a strong chess player, but mainly to a very noble sportsman. David made a move that, to my mind, none in the chess world would have been able to make. I was shocked when he offered a draw. I would like to express my admiration of his deed and to wish him good luck a t the World Cup.

— Evgeny, you used to be a very famous sportsman. Have you ever faced such situations before?

— Redkin: Of course, I did. I witnessed a similar situation by our compatriot, the Ugorian biathlete Yuri Kashkarov. During one of the World Championships Yuri was performing for the USSR national team that was loosing to the national team of Germany. During the race one of the German sportsmen fell down and broke the binding. Yuri was close to him. He offered his equipment to the opponent thus enabled him to continue the race. Nevertheless, the team of the USSR became the World Champion.
